Take a train of Tokaidou-honsen line of JR East company at Tokyo station.
It casts 450 Yen.

The track numbers for the train at Tokyo station is either 7 or 8.
It takes app. 25 minutes.

Do you want to go to Yokohama station or to Yokohama city?
If you want to go to Yokohama city, note that there are many JR stations in Yokohama city.
Ohter station in Yokohama city may be nearest to the place you want to visit.

How to travel from Tokyo to Yokohama in a reasonable fee?

Mario, Japan 15 May 2003 01:43:15
Hi!

Here are the answers to your questions. If you have further questions, do not hesitate to ask me.

1) After you exit the skyliner you do not need to pass any gate before you can buy ticket for JR.
In other word there is a ticket office for JR tickets just before the exit gate of Keisei.
As there is a manned ticket office besides automatic ticket vending machine there, you do not need to worry.
For your reference I would like to inform you that you can buy a ticket, by which you can go to Nippori station via Keisei, change trains to JR at Nippori station, then further go to a JR station by JR, at the automatic ticket vending machine or a Keisei ticket office in Narita airport terminal station and Airport terminal 2 station.

2) The situations are differnt between JR and subways.
In case of JR : The stations have clear sign for platform numbers. So as long as you know platform number, it is very easy to go to the platform. If you do not know the platform number, then you need to check the train rout name (like Yamanote-sen Sotomawari). If you do not even know the line rout name and know the station name only, only way is to ask some Japanese nereby. (I am afraid there are not much Japanese who speaks English)

3) You need to exit a gate from JR and then enter a gate to subway.
You have to exit a gate, as long as you change train companies (there are some exceptions).

I understand you feeling that you would like to prepare so that you will not get lost at a foreign conutry. I often had same feeling when I made business trip to abroad. I visited various countries including your country (Kuala Lumpur).

Hi there! 3 questions here, hope you can help!

1)I will be transferring from the skyliner to Yamanote line at Nippori. My question is after I exit the skyliner do I have to pass through any gates before I can buy tickets for JR? I understand from your website that I will need to cross the transfer bridge and buy JR ticket from there. What happens to my skyliner ticket?

2)I will be doing a lot of transferring this time. Will the stations have clear directions on how to proceed to the correct platform for my transfer?

3)If I change from JR to subway, do I have to exit the station or pass through any gates first?

Thanks for your help. I want to make sure I don't get lost when I transfer.=)

Thank you so much for your help, Mario!
I am sure I will enjoy my ride on the streetcar with your suggestions!

Mario, Japan 5 May 2003 16:43:18
Hi!

Toei Arakawa Streetcar is famous even among Japanese. Many web sites about the reports on ride of Toei Arakawa and walk around the stations can be found. Moreover TV programs introducing ride of Toei Arakawa and walk around the stations sometimes can sometimes be seen.

I have not trided the one, but my wife tried it once.
I investigated the web sites on the ride of Toei Arakawa and walk around the stations.
I found the following places seems to be interesting to visit.

1. Minowa-bashi station (terminal stationn fo Toei Arakawa) --> 5 Shopping streets (Souten-gei in Japanese). The nearest one is "Minowa Ginza Syouten-bgai".
You will find food seems tasty, buy it and eat while walking.
Please refer the following web site on the map on the shopping streets (written in Japanese).
http://www.tcn-catv.ne.jp/~joyfulminowa/townmap.gif
The Toei Arakawa line and Minowa-bashi station is written on left-lower corner in the map of the web site.

2. Arakawa Yuenchi-mae station : Arakawa play land (three minutes on foot from the station)

3. Asukayama station : (1) Paper musium (Kami-no-hakubutsukan) (4 minutes on foot)
You can try to make paper by hand (Kamisuki in Japanese).
They have English web site : http://www.papermuseum.jp/historye.htm
Although Arakawa Yuenchi-mae station is not written and only JR Oji station is written in the map of the web site, Arkawa Yuenchi-mae station is nearer to the museum than JR Oji station.
(2) Goethe musium : 6 minutes on foot from the station.
(3) Asukayama park : One minute of foot from the station

3. Kishibojin staion : Kishibojin shrine (Kishibojin-dou) Two minutes on foot from the station.

Have a good day in Tokyo !

minami 5 May 2003 03:11:11
Anyone took the Toei Arakawa Streetcar before? Seems interesting to me since it's Tokyo's last existing streetcar. Planning to get the one day ticket which costs only 400 Yen! Any recommendations on interesting stops to get off at?
Thanks!

Hi, Minami

Here are the answers to your questions !

1) First of all I would like to clarify that two trains similar to skyliner trains before 9 a.m. are called as "morning liner" (not "morning slyliner" as you wrote). The tickets for morning liner can be bought only from ticket counter. Fro your reference the deprture times of the two morning liners at Narita airport station is 7:49 and 8:32 on weekdays and 7:45 and 8:32 on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays.

2) As long as you get on the train at the Narita ariport station or Airport terminal 2 station, any train is not generally crowded.
There is no required time difference between by a morning liner and a limited express from the airport to Nippori. It takes app. 80 minutes in both cases (note it takes 60 minutes in the case of skyliner).
I recommend you to take a limited express.

3) As you may notice from my webpage you need to go up from platform of Keisei Nippori station to the transfer bridge, walk on the bridge and then go down to the platform of JR lines. There is a escalator when you go up at the Keisei`s platform. There is not a escalator when you go down at the JR`s platform. The number of steps of the stairs at the JR is not so much.

I hope you will make a pleasant trip in Japan.

minami 3 May 2003 02:48:08
Hi!
This is a useful website! Got 3 questions : 1)can tickets for morning skyliner be bought from ticket counter or vending machines?
2) Indecisive over taking limited express or skyliner. Any recommendations? Will limited express be quite crowded coz I'm arriving at narita at 730am.
3) Do I have to take a lot of stairs while transfering at Nippori? Not too sure if I can manage to carry my luggage..
Thanks!

***** Correction for the way to Funabashi-Keibajo station. ******
This is to correct my information wrote at 10:20:05 on 15 Apr 2003.
The trains depart from the Narita airport station do not stop Funabashi-Keibajo.
You need to change trains once.
The tranis depart from the Narita airport station are either "super-express" or "limited express".
Both do not stop at Funabashi-keibajo. Only "express" and "ordinal" trains stop at the station and they do not depart from the Narita airport station but depart from Keisei-Narita station or another station.

I recommend the followings:
Get on a "limited express" (do not get on a super express) at the Narita airport station bound for Ueno. Get off at the Keisei-Tsudanuma station after 40 minutes ride which is the sixth stop form the Narita airport station (Narita airport station --> Airport terminal 2 station --> Keisei-Narita station -->Keisei-sakura --> Katsutadai --> Yachiyodai --> Keisei Tsudanuma). Get on a "express" train or an ordinal train at the Keisei-Tsudanuma station. Get off at Funabashi-Keibajo which is second stop from the Keisei-Tudanuma after 4 minutes ride.

Hope you will arive the destination correctly and Waiting for your message on this message board after your adventure in Japan, if any.

Mario 15 Apr 2003 10:20:05
The Funabashi-keibajo station is on the way from Narita airport station to Ueno station via Keisei line. Get on ordinal train or limited express (do not get on superexpress) at the Narita airport station and get off at Funabashi-Keibajo station. You can go there by only one train (Keisei line). It takes 42 minutes and costs you 720 J.Yen.

Sorry that was going to be how to get to Funabashi Keibajo. I hope this will help.

I will be arriving in Narita airport on the 16th and I need to get to Funabashi, how can I get there by train? I am hoping that I can take only 1 train to avoid getting lost. I can read hiragana and Katakana and some kanji if this helps any but I am afraid of getting lost. Please give me the most detail that you can.

Hi Chay,

The cheapsest and fastest way is as follows:
1. Get on a train of JR Yamanote-line Sotomawari (outer loop)
2. Get off at Tokyo
3. Change train at Tokyo to Keiyo-sen line.
4. Get off at Maihama station
5. Tokyo Disneyland is in front of the station

It takes app. 50 minites and costs you 290 J.Yen.

The platform for Keiyo-sen line at Tokyo station is rather far from the platform of Yamanote-sen line. Though both platforms are in the same Tokyo station. The platform of Keiyo-line is underground (very deep level). It takes 10 to 15 minutes to reach there form platform of Yamanote-sen.

Dear Don,

Thanks for your message.

I am 99.9 % sure that you can purchase a Skyliner ticket at Keisei Ueno station a few minutes before the Skyliner departure. I recommnd to buy the ticket at least 5 minutes before the train departure in stead of a few minutes. I got on Keisei Skyliner many times and the number of passengers was always less than 50 % of the capacity of the cabin. (On the contrary JR Narita Express is always full.) Note that the Keisei Ueno station is not the same place as JR Ueno station as I described in my web page.

Please note that the last Skyliner from Keisei Ueno station bound for Narita airport station departs at 17:25 on weekday. After that time you can ride on Keisei evening liner whose ticket is 400 Yen (in addition to 1,000Yen). The departure times are 17:56, 18:40, 19:20, 20:00, 21:00, 22:00. The first 4 trains are bound for Narita Airport station and last two trains for Keisei Narita station.

Dear Mario,

Thank you so much for your prompt and comprehensive response. Tokyo's public transportation is mind boggling (but challenging!), and you are doing a great service to visitors to Japan like me.

Subsequent to your email, I discovered that there is a Toei-Eidan subway pass for Y1000. As you said, Eidan covers all areas adequately, so I will scrutinise my itinerary to see if I need to fork out the extra Y290 for Toei!

Thanks for the tip about Narita JR station. Actually, my hotel will be quite near that station, but if the trains are 1/2 hour apart, than I don't think that will be an option for me. Besides, Keisei Limited Express from the airport seems much faster. I will probably take the Skyliner from Ueno returning to Narita in the evening to avoid the rush-hour crowds. Is it possible to purchase a Skyliner ticket on the spot at Ueno, i.e. a few minutes before the train departs?

Regards,
Don

Mario, Japan 12 Mar 2003 09:37:58
Hi Win,

Reserve a shinkansen ticket even 10 minutes before you start. There are so many trains running (evey 7 to 8 minutes) from Tokyo to Kyoto and app 1,600 passengers can ride on one shinkansen train (there are 16 cars in one shinkansen train). I would like to inform you that a reservation ticket can be refunded very easily even if you purchase the ticket in advance. Be carefull the cancellation should be before the departure of that train.

Mario

Hi Mario,

Thanks for your previous message! I still have one question about reservation on a shinkansen to kyoto.
I'm planning on taking a trip from tokyo to kyoto with a hikari shinkansen on 22 March (I have a JR railpass which I will validate on 21 March). Now is my question, do you have any idea if those shikansen are highly used or will there be still enough free places when I reserve on 21 March for a trip on 22 March, or should I take the reservation earlier ? (I'd like to take the reservation as late as possible so that I can still change days if I like)

Thanks in advance!
Wim

Mario, Japan 12 Mar 2003 01:58:48
Hi Don,

You investigated the transportation of Japan very well.

1.The plan you made is best plan to make one day visit to Tokyo from an area around of Narita airport. The total fare of your plan is very cheap (2,710 Yen (1,000 + 710 + 1,000)) and effective. There can be a way by 2,600 Yen which is not effective (you have to go to Narita from Narita airport and purchase a ticket at the Narita station which may loose helf or one hour including next train.

2. Both subway and JR have frequent trains. You may select one of the two for your one day traisportation in the metropolitan area.

3. Subways has more stations/stops at major attractions in Tokyo. But JR has also sufficient stations/stops. I would like to mention that there is no way to reach to Asakusa, which is very famous spot for foreigners, by JR. Only subway takes you to Asakusa.

4. A 4-year child ride the Keisei, subway and JR is free. In Japan a child under 6 years can have free ride.

5. You can buy one ticket from Narita airport to go to one destination of JR via Keisei line. There will be no discount for such ticket. The fare is the same when you buy a ticket at Narita airport to Nippori via Keisei line and buy a new ticket at the Nippori station to Akihabara. Note that there is no such combined ticket of Keisei line ticket and one day free subway ticket. I recommnend you to buy a ticket of Keisei to Ueno at Narita airport station and buy one day subway pass at Ueno subway station.

6. Note that there are two kinds of subway companies in Tokyo and the one day free subway ticket of 710 yen whick you mentioned is only for Eidan subway lines. You can not use the ticket for Toei subway lines. But it is not the problem. Allmost all major attractive places in Tokyo are covered by Eidan subway lines.

Hope you will have a happy day in Tokyo.

Mario

Don, KL, Malaysia 11 Mar 2003 19:06:40
Hello Mario,
I have one day (a weekday) to spend in Tokyo and will be staying at a Narita airport hotel.

I intend to take the shuttle bus from the hotel to Narita Terminal 2. From there take a Keisei limited express to Ueno-Keisei (Y1000), and walk to a Ueno subway station.. From there, get a one-day subway pass (Y710) and use the subway only for travelling within Tokyo (I intend to visit Akihabara, Ginza and Shinjuku areas). Using this plan, I would not of course use JR.

Is this the best & cheapest method for my itinerary?
Which has more frequent trains within central Tokyo - JR or subway?
Which has more stations/stops at the major attractions in Tokyo - JR or subway?
Can a 4-year old child ride the Keisei or JR for free?
Are transfers possible between different rail companies i.e. JR, Keisei and Subway? For example, could I buy one ticket from Narita airport to go all the way to Akihabara (a combination of Keisei and JR/subway).

Thanks for your help.

Mario, Japan 9 Mar 2003 15:55:10
Hi,

1.Time table
As far as I know and investigated there is no train time table of metropolitan area in English. Of cource you can purchase train time table written in Japanese at a shop of Narita terminal No.2.
I hereby post the time table of JR rapid service between 9:00 am and 15:00 at the Airport teminal station No.2 to Tokyo.

2.Airport terminal 2 station -> Tokyo : Rapid service (fare 1,280 J.Yen)
9:04-10:34, 10:02-11:30, 11:02-12:26, 11:47-13:19, 13:03-14:24, 13:47-15:22, 15:02-16:22
As any train goes to Tokyo, no transfer is required.

3.Airport terminal 2 station -> Tokyo -> Ikebukuro (fare 1,450 Yen from Airport to Ikebukuro via Tokyo : Purchase a ticket for Ikebukuro at the Airport)
If you want to go to Ikebukuro from Tokyo, change train at Tokyo to JR Yamanote-sen line - Uchimawari (inner roop). It takes 24 minutes.
Trains of JR yamanotesen-line runs every 3-5 minutes.
The rapid service from the Airport arrives at a platform of the level 2 underground floor of Tokyo station. Go up to the basement floor and go to the platform No.4 where the Yamanotesen-line Uchimawari leaves.

4. Airport terminal 2 station -> Ikebukuro : Keisei limited express + JR Yamanote-sen line
If you want to go to Ikebukuro, I recommend you to take Keisei in stead of JR.
Airport terminal 2 station -> Nippori : Keisei limited express (fare 1,000 J.Yen, 70 minutes)
9:05-10:13, 9:30-10:38, 9:46-10:57, 10:05-11:15, 10:23-11:37, 10:44-11:55, 11:05-12:17, 11:24-12:35, 11:43:12:57
Nippori -> Ikebukuro : Yamanote-sen line Uchimawari (fare 160 Yen, 13 minutes)
As for method to transfer trains at Nippori station from Keisei train to JR train please refer my web site below:
http://www.zephyr.dti.ne.jp/~uesugi/tokyo/NipporSt.html

If you have further questions do not hesitate to ask me.

Hi,
I've got a question about getting from Narita Airport to Tokyo or Ikebukuro. I would like to take the cheapest route via the JR Rapid service, but I don't find any timetables. I will be arriving at Narita Airport Terminal 2 around 9am on 17march. Do you know where I can find a timetable for it? and how many transfers would I have to take (to get to Tokyo)?
Thanks for your help! Wim

Mario, Japan 6 Mar 2003 00:27:46
Hi, here is the answer to your question.

1. If the day you intend to travel to Tokyo is Suturday, Sunday or Japanese national holiday and before March 30, 2003, purchase a ticket "Holiday pass" which costs 2,040J.Yen at Narita airport station. You can travel from Narita to Tokyo petropolitan area, get on and off as many times as you want in the area and go back to Narita airport station. The tichket is valid for one day. As for the ticket office at Narita airport, refer http://www.zephyr.dti.ne.jp/~uesugi/tokyo/Trn%20Tckt.html

2. If the day is weekday, purchase the "Tokyo Free Ticket (Tokyo Jiyuu Jousya-ken) ". It costs 2,140J.Yen. You can travel in the same mannter as item 1 above. I am not sure at this moment whether a ticket starting from Narita airport station to the metropolitan area. It is sure that a ticket is avilable from the Narita station (not Narita airport station). I am not sure at this moment whether this ticket can be purchased at Narita airport station or not, because the time in Japan now is 24:17 and nobody picked up phone at the stations. If you further ask me, I will call the train station and ask the question and let you know via this message board.

3. The ticket of 1580Yen you mentioned is the one day free ticket within the are of metropolitan area. You have to purchase another ticket from Narita airport station to the metropolitan area which costs app. 2,000 J.Yen (round fare) in addition to 1580 Yen. Accordingly the method No.1 or No. 2 is better.

If you have further questions, do not hesitate to ask me again. If you inform me of exact date and time to visit Tokyo, I may be able to tell you more accurate information and may able to give further information after I will call train stations.

Hi, I have only a day to spare in Narita and Tokyo. Is there a special fare (by train or bus) from Narita to Tokyo back to Narita within the same day? I also saw a foreigner special of 1580 yen - for a one day unlimited ride within Tokyo, it does not indicate where I could buy this fare. Please advise if you have any information. As far as I investigated, there is no city named Nakakoma. There is Nakakoma-gun(county or rural district) in Yamanashi-ken(prefecture). The Nakakoma-gun consists of 9 mati(town) and 2 mura(village). Nearest train station is different depending on either town or village. Nearest stations are Kofu, Minami-kofu, Nirazaki or Ichikawa-honmachi. As the biggest station is Kofu, I recommend you to go to Kofu station. One of the routes from Shimotsuma to Kofu is as follows;

1.Take Kantou-tetsudou-jousousen line at Shimotsuma bound for Toride station.
It takes 63 minutes from Shimotsuma station to Toride station.
2.Change trains to Kaisoku(rapid) train at Toride of JR Joubansen line bound for Ueno station.
It takes app. 37 minutes from Toride station to Kitasenju station.
3.Change train at Kitasenju station to Kakutei(ordinal) train bound for Yoyogiuehara.
It takes app. 14 minutes from Kitasenju station to Shin-ochanomizu station.
4.Get off at Shin-ochanomizu station. Go our from rear side exit (JR Ochanomizu station s
ide exit) at Shin-ochanomizu station.
5.Purchace JR tichet at automatic ticket vending machine and enter into the Ochanomizu station.
Get on a rapid train of JR Chuou-sen line bound for Takao station.
It takes 54 minutes from Shin-ochanomizu station to Takao station.
6.Change trains at Takao station to JR Chuou-sen line bound for Kofu.
It takes app. 100 minutes from Takao station to Kofu.

Total fare is 4,080 Yen and takes 4 hours and 45 minutes.
There is a express train from Shinjuku to Kofu. It is 30 to 40 minutes shorter than the above and 2,000 Yen more than that of above.

If you need different information or additionnal information, do not hesitate to ask me.

Hi,

As far as I found, the chepest way from Shinagawa to Narita airport is as follows,
The fare is 1,170 JYen. It generally takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

1. Get on a train of Yokosuka-sen line for the direction to Tokyo, Funabashi, Tsudanuma or Narita airport at Shinagawa station. The track number 13 is for such train. The destination of the train may be Tokyo (nearest destination), Funagashi, Tsudanuma or Narita station(farthest destination).

2. Get off the train at Funabashi station.

3. Walk to Keisei Funabashi station which is 4 minutes walk on foot.

4. Get on a train bound for Narita airport at Keisei Funabashi.

5. Arrive Narita airport station.

It takes 36 minutes from Shinagawa station to Funabashi station. 450 JYen
It takes 45 minutes from Keisei Funabashi station to Narita airport. 720 JYen

If you take train bound for Narita airport at Shinagawa station and do not change train at Funabashi, it takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. There are not much train which is bound for Narita airport (app. one every one hour). 1,450 JYen

Mario

Mario 14 Nov 2002 00:23:15
Hi,

As the bus stop at Shinjuku from Tokyo disneyland is very near to Shinjuku station, you`d better just to go in the Shinjuku station and get on the Yamanote-sen Uchimawari.

The bus from Tokyo Disneyland to Shinjuku stops at the bus terminal app. 30 meters to the Shin-minami-guchi (new south entrance) of Shinjuku station and 100 meters to the Higashi-minami-guchi (South east entrance) of Shinjuku station.

Although both entrances are valid for you to get on the train to Harajuku, you`d better to enter from the Higashi-minamiguchi (South east entrance).

The track number for Harajuku (Yamanote-sen Uchimawari) is 12. Any train which leaves from track number 12 goes to Harajuku. Fare from Shinjuku to Harajuku is 130 JYen.

If you have some more days to go to Japan, I will draw a map of Shinjuku station and the bus stop and put on web. Please inform me of the date you plan to visit Japan, if you do not mind.

Kim, Singapore 13 Nov 2002 19:30:12
Hi,

sorry..more qn:

the Shinjuku station is well know to be one of the busiest station as many rail lines intersect. May I know if there are information counters to assist non-Japanese speakers to get on the Yamanote-sen line to Harajuku, as we may not understand the signboards that cld be in Japanese characters.

many thanks.

Hi Mario,

really appreciate your help. Hope I will be able to find my way there. Thank you very much for going the extra miles :o)

Mario 13 Nov 2002 00:43:15
Dear Kim,

Thanks for your inquiry. Here are the answers.
2) It takes 4 minutes from Shinjuku to Harajuku by JR Yamanote-sen.
Please refer the following web page.
http://www.zephyr.dti.ne.jp/~uesugi/tokyo/DtlMapJR.html
3) It takes 25 minutes from Harajuku to Nippori by Yamanote-sen Sotomawari.
(I would like to correct the former information that I recommended you to take Uchimawari.
Sotomawari is faster from Harajuku to Nippori.)
Please also refer the web page mentioned in item 2) above.
4) You do not need to reserve ticket in advance for Keisei evening liner.
Ticket can be purchased at the vending machines in Nippori station at the transfer gate
in Nippori station.
5) and 6)
It is very easy to transfer from JR Yamanote-sen to Keisei-line.
It is like this.
The train of JR Yamanote-sen Sotomawari arrives track number 10 in Nippori station.
Get off the train.
Look around the sign which tells the destination to the transfer to Keisei-line
or to the platform of track No. 10.
Go up the stairs to the transfer bridge. Move to the direction to Keisei or track No.1&2.

Hi Mario,

thank you for your prompt reply, would greatly appreciate if you could verify the following info n help me with the qns.

1) I planned to leave Disneyland for Harajuku at 4 pm. The route I ve checked was to depart by bus from Disneyland to Shinjuku at 4:25, and reach Shinjuku after 60 mins.

2) From Shinjuku, I will take the JR Yamanote-sen line to Harajuku. How long will the journey be?

3) The shops at Harajuku close at around 8 pm (info fr net). Take dinner and leave Harajuku by 9:30, taking the JR Yamanote-sen line as advsied to Nippori. How long does it take to get to Nippori from Harajuku?

4) Fr Nippori to Keisei Narita Station, do I have to reserve tickets in advance for the Keisei evening liner? or the tickets can be purchased at the vending machines?

5) Is there a information counter to assist non-Japanese speakers ? (as we may not know which train to transfer to)

6) I will probably need to get back to Narita Garden Hotel by midnight, which is 8 mins by shuttle bus fr Keisei Narita Station. Do you have any idea where to board the shuttle bus and how much it costs?

Would appreciate if you could provide us with the exact train departure time.

thank you very much.

Dear Kim,

The fastest way to return to Keisei Narita station at night is the following:
(This information is based on the time table of working day)

Harajuku --> Yoyogi --> Kinshicho --> Funabashi --> on foot --> Keisei Funabashi --> Keisei Narita station (total 1 hour and 47 minutes)

As this way above is very difficult for foreigners, I recommend the following way:
Leave Harajuku by JR Yamanote-sen line - Uchimawari to the direction to Shinagawa, Tokyo, Ueno and Nippori.
Arrive Nippori
(change trains from JR to Keisei line at Nippori)
Liave Nippori by the Keisei evening liner
Arrive Keisei Narita
(Total 2 hours and 15 - 30 minutes, total fare is 1,590JYen)

If you want know exact train time (departure and arrival), inform me of date and latest time you want to arrive Kesei Narita station. I will let you know.
