　"It came upon the midnight clear"（あめなる神には）といえば，1819年にボストンに生まれ，1900年にデトロイトで没したアメリカの音楽家リチャード・S・ウィリスが1850年に作ったキャロルが圧倒的に有名で，アメリカの代表的なキャロルであるばかりでなく，今や全世界で歌われるキャロルの古典的名曲となっている。6/8拍子の跳ねるような流麗なメロディーは一度聴くと忘れがたい。
　ところが，英国はここでもこの強力なキャロルに一人敢然と立ち向かうのである。普通英国で"It came upon the midnight clear"といえば，自国の誇る作曲家アーサー・S・サリヴァン（1842-1900）が1871年に英国のトラディショナル・キャロルを編曲したもののことを指す。ロンドンに生まれロンドンに没した生粋の英国人サリヴァンは，台本作家ギルバートとのコンビで数々の陽気なオペレッタを発表し，ヴィクトリア朝英国で最も人気のある作曲家の一人であった。しかしいくらコミカルなオペレッタを得意としたサリヴァンでも，さすがにこのキャロルはトラディショナル・キャロルの編曲だけあって渋く地味である。ウィリスの曲のような華やかさはないが，英国の合唱団が教会でしっとりと歌うのにいかにもふさわしい曲である。

*作詞者のE.H. Searsは1810年にアメリカのマサチューセッツ州で生まれ，1876年同地で没するまでユニテリアン教会で活動を続けた。この詞は友人のW. P. Luntの求めに応じて書かれたもの。1849年の日曜学校クリスマス祝祭で初めて歌われた。

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold;
“Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all gracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains, they bend on hovering wing,
And ever over its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.
