　アメリカで"O little town of Bethlehem"（ああベツレヘムよ）といえば，作詞者のフィリップス・ブルックスと同じフィラデルフィアの教会のオルガニストを務めていたL・H・レドナー（1830-1908）が1868年に作曲した曲のことを指す。S・ウィリスの"It came upon the midnight clear"（あめなる神には）と並び，アメリカ生まれのキャロルの代表作として，クリスマスCDには必ずといってよいほど収められている有名曲である。ちょっと夢見るようなロマンティックなメロディーが人々に広く受け入れられた理由であろう。
　ところが，やはりというべきか英国はアメリカの有名キャロルに従うことをよしとしない。英国で"O little town of Bethlehem"といえば，英国近代の大作曲家ヴォーン・ウィリアムズが，イングランド古謡“Forest Green”を20世紀初頭の1906年にアレンジしてキャロルとしたものを指すのである。どちらの曲がいいかというのは好みの問題でしかないが，イギリスびいきの私にはレドナーのキャロルは少し甘すぎて，断然ヴォーン・ウィリアムズの威風堂々としたキャロルに軍配を上げたくなる。皆さんはいかがでしょうか？

歌詞　（Phillips Brooks；1867）
*作詞者のPhillips Brooksは1835年にボストンで生まれ，1893年同地で没したアメリカ人で，「19世紀アメリカの最も偉大な牧師」と呼ばれる。この詞は，フィラデルフィアの聖三位一体教会の牧師を勤めていたときに日曜学校の生徒のために書いたもの。

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth!

How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is giv’n;
