　"While shepherds watched"（羊飼いたちが）には，２曲のメジャーなキャロルがあるが，どちらも英国のキャロルといってもよいものである。一つは，"Este's Psalter; 1592"という16世紀の聖歌集"Este's Psalter"に収められた"Winchester Old"という古謡によるものである。もう一つは，英国で活躍したドイツ人の大作曲家ヘンデルが1728年に作曲した"Christmas"という曲によるもの。 後に"Harmonia Sacra; 1812"に収められた。
　ヘンデルの曲はいかにも彼らしい明るく勇壮な曲だけれども，しっとりした情感には乏しい。それに対して，古謡の方はゆっくりとしたテンポでそっと始まる。天使が野宿していた羊飼いたちに救い主イエスの到来を告げるという，クリスマスの静かな喜びに満ちた歌詞にふさわしいキャロルはこちらの方であろう。英国で人気があるのも，この古い方の"While shepherds watched"なのである。日本ではあまり知られていないが，聴くほどに味わいのある英国トラディショナル・キャロルの名作で，私の大好きな曲の一つである。

歌詞　（Nahum Tate；1700）
*作詞者のNahum Tate（1652-1715）はアイルランドのダブリンで生まれ，ロンドンで没した詩人。この詞は1700年に作られたが，最初に出版されたのは"Tate and Brady’s Psalter; 1702"においてである。

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around,

“Fear not!” said he, for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind.
“Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind

“To you, in David’s town, this day
