Map of JR Lines in Central Tokyo

There are four JR lines in the center of Tokyo.
  • Yamanote-sen line
  • Keihin-Tohoku-sen line
  • Soubu-sen line
  • Chuuou-sen line
"Sen" in Japanese means line.

When you want to ask about the way from a Japanese, you must drop the word "sen".

Yamanote-sen Line
  • It is a loop
  • There are two directions, the inner loop / the outer loop.
  • It is about 6 km holizontally and  12 km vertically.
  • The length of the loop is 34.5 km.
  • There are 29 stations.
  • It takes 64 minutes for one circle.
Keihin-Tohoku-sen Line
  • It starts form Omiya which is about 30 km far from the north of Tokyo station, it goes around the central part of Tokyo from the northern area to the south, also it goes further to Yokohama which is located 30 km far from southwest of Tokyo station.
  • It runs in parallel with Yamanote-sen line for 14 stations, Ueno, Tokyo, Shinagawa and etc.
  • There are express train service during 10:30am to 15:30pm which skips 8 stations. If you are interested to get off in one of those 8 stations, you must take either Yamanote-sen line.
Soubu-sen Line
  • It starts form Chiba, about 30 km far from the east of Tokyo station, runs central part of Tokyo from the east to the west and further goes to Takao, 46 km far from the west of Tokyo station.
  • There are 9 stations placed in of Yamonote-sen loop including Shinjuku station which takes 18 minutes to reach.
Chuuou-sen Lin
  • It starts from Tokyo station runs center of Tokyo towards the west side and reaches to Takao.
  • It stops only in two stations before arriving to Shinjuku. It takes 12 minutes from Tokyo to Shinjuku.
